Same-sex marriage was legalized in Taiwan on May 24, 2019, but while same-sex couples were granted more rights as a result, full marriage equality was not achieved because various legal provisions still treat different-sex and same-sex couples disparately.
Institutional sexism and gender subordination exist in Taiwan, and they are problems that need to be discussed and addressed. To effectively tackle the issue, having accurate analyses of the current situation is essential.
Although the new marriage equality bill suggests equal treatment for same-sex marriage, it is still full of deficiencies that prevent true equality.
