On a rainy September morning eleven years ago, I woke up alone. I’d been in Taiwan for two weeks, and it was my birthday. I hadn’t made any friends yet.
The recently passed bill is a step forward, but we should not lose sight of the bigger picture of what transitional justice truly represents in Taiwan.
If more Taiwanese citizens are made aware of the double standard in their laws, we will have more local support and a better chance at substantive reform.
